A Spoiler-Free Review
Kevin Smith and Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a blast from the past mixed with modern storytelling. The show does a great job picking up as a sequel to the 1983 series, while at the same time being very accessible to newcomers to l the franchise. Characters retain their classic characteristics, but are smartly built and expanded on. Forcing certain characters to work together despite ideological differences makes for great scenes where the cast gets to really shine.
When it comes to the series animation, the team at Powerhouse Animati on Studios knocks it out of the park. From the intimate moments to the action packed fight scenes, the animation just feels right. At least once an episode, the hairs on my arms would stand up as a fight would build and the music swelled. That the show was able to do this again and again left me pleasantly surprised.
The plot is pretty much the only thing that I can think of that might divide people on the show. They make some pretty bold choices that I think are great, but franchise fans may be a little disappointed with. That said, I think that will be resolved in Part 2.
Story - all meat and no fat
Action - high energy and
Animation - looks amazing, but still feels true to the 80’s
3rd Act Pacing - could have used one more episode
In short, I can’t wait for Part 2. And you should check out Part 1 if you haven’t already.
